City Receives National Award in Food Processing


Sioux City has again been selected as one of five national recipients of Expansion Solution
Magazine’s 2008 Award of Excellence in Food Processing for a second consecutive year. The award recognizes areas that have made exceptional progress in economic development by successfully recruiting and retaining businesses.

Food processing is one of Sioux City’s major employers with long standing businesses such as
Cargill, John Morrell, Jolly Time Popcorn, Kent Feeds, Tyson, Sue Bee Honey, Tur-Pak Foods, Sara Lee, Curly’s and Staber Meats providing successful operations for decades with many growing and expanding in recent years.  An outstanding distribution network, diverse workforce and innovative financial assistance programs continue to assist new and existing companies in Sioux City.  “We are pleased to receive this recognition twice and will continue work to grow  the food processing industry”, stated Sioux City Economic Development Director, Marty Dougherty.  “Sioux City offers a number of ideal locations, including Bridgeport and the new Southbridge Industrial area located south of the Sioux Gateway Airport, and a competitive business environment.”

Other recipients of the award included the Cumberland County Department of Planning and Development in Bridgeton, NJ, Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development
Corporation in Martinsville, Virginia, San Joaquin Partnership in Stockton, CA and the
Springdale Chamber of Commerce in Springdale, AR.
